A cluster of three sidewalk pots at Fourth and "B" Streets in downtown Oxnard were designed to offer a variety of colors, textures and forms to enhance the pedestrian experience of shopping, dining and visiting. The mosaic mural in the background was done by a San Diego artist.
Planting Succulents for a More Vibrant Downtown
When Downtown Oxnard merchants proposed a beautification project for their streets they never thought it would grow into such a large scale project.
The Martin V. and Martha K. Smith Foundation announced beautification grants were available in early 2010. The Oxnard Downtown Management District with help from Gary Blum, applied for a grant of $75,000 which was fully awarded in August of 2010. The project literally took a life of its own as three City departments gave additional support to expand the project and the Oxnard Downtown Management District guided the program with long term management.
Today
downtown Oxnard has 162 decorative planters covering thirteen city blocks on
eight streets. With nearly 40 species of colorful succulent and perennial
plants it makes a big impact for year round color and curb appeal to the 300
businesses that comprise Oxnard’s downtown business district.
Tackling
the ongoing maintenance of the planters was the most creative part of the
project. Utilizing several entities such as Oxnard’s renowned City Corps Youth
program as well as relying on volunteers that are professionally trained and managed.
The Downtown Oxnard Management District launched its own “DOGS” volunteer
program so called for being the “Downtown Oxnard Gardeners” with residents who
wanted to learn more about succulents and their proper care.
Each planter’s maintenance cost is kept affordable at $125 per year where nearby downtowns pay $300 to $400 per year. The planters are available for adoption by residents and businesses to help offset the maintenance cost. For more information go to:
